Conceived as a single inhabited volume the extruded gable end under a vaulted roof maximised available internal space. Each space is connected to the other via apetures that extend the visual size of the internal rooms. The extension creates an enlarged wrap around kitchen, dining and utility with direct access to the outside, enabling a new entry space, storage and shower room to be created from the existing downstairs layout. A new vaulted bedroom, home working space, and storage mezzanine maximise the end of terrace aspect at first floor, to complete the transformation.
A key aspect to unlocking the layout was to minimise the need for unwanted circulation. By placing the kitchen/living space central to the garden each space feeds into another to inform the relationship and flow between rooms. By visually linking adjacencies through high level apertures we created opportunities for daylight to enhance rooms at different times of day.
The interiors manifest from external architecture and structure, simply finished in birch faced ply to add warmth and an audible comfort. The resulting spaces are convivial, relaxed and homely.
