Lawrence House

This shortlisted project created thirteen rentable apartments on a brownfield site adjacent a busy Cambridge artierial road. Close to local amenities and the City, the four storey building overcame a number of constraints, to deliver sustainable high quality urban living.

Design

The building used a hybrid form of construction to minimise reliance upon carbon intensive solutions and achieve internal layout flexibility. The design also avoids the need for roof plant by utilising independent mechanical ventilation and heating units within each apartment, alongside openable windows, to enable residents to adjust and control their internal environment. Using a fabric first approach to the building facade and roof the design is a great example of sustainable urban dwelling.

Planning

Designs by studio24 architects replaced a previously withdrawn application overcoming planning policy concerns and constraints. Our approach considered two volumes of varying size and materiality to reduce the buildings visual scale, wrapped around a shared secluded garden at the rear. A folded metal facade and roof profile straddles two masonry volumes to address the context of neighbouring buildings.
